August 24, 2002 Well we just fininshed our 2nd anual superstars competition and what a competition it was. It came down to the last event, with Ken Maass coming out the event winner topping Scott Randels by just three points. Think about it, over 25 different events and it comes down to three points. The competition was fearce as ever, as was the comraderie and new friendships made! I personally want to thank all the new competitors and past competitors for their participation in this event. I truely enjoy putting my efforts toward the day. Thank you all for participation and competitivenses you made it fun! A few pictures of the event. If anyone has photos please forward them to me so I can post them to the webpage. |

Keep in mind this event was put together with a forty year old body in mind. If you are younger you could possibly have an advantage, if you are older you could be challenged. If you believe anything you are seriously in trouble. Last years Superstars went down to the last event, with about five guys with a chance to win the golden jock award (Superstars Perpetual Plaque). The eventual winner was Ray " Chunks" Brown. With 3rd baby now at hand we hope he might be able to sneak away to compete.
Thank you all for competing. I hope you had fun and I hope you pass how much fun you had to a friend and bothof you compete next year in the 3rd annual event which will probably be held somewhere near the last two weeks of July 2003.
Event #1 Age
In this years competition a new format was instituted called the Ray Brown Factor. The first event was a weighting by age. The oldest competitor was awarded first place to the youngest last.
1 Dave Little 2 Bob Anderson 3 Bill Corrette 4 Mitch Gold 5 Roger Connor 17 Slawek Dymerksi
Event #2 Miniture Golf
This years superstars included a new venue at Boomers. The first event on our list was miniture golf. A group consisting of R. Connor, S. Randles, B. Corrette, and M. Dowd held their against the 17 participants of the 2002 superstars event. Bills' fine putting put him far above his competition. Bills 18 hole total of 45 was seven strokes below par and some seven strokes below par. Bill is a new competitor this year but has established himself as a feirce competitor. The course selected for competition was very difficult. The course contained many windmill type miniture golf fixtures which required going up a ramp only to be dumped off onto a lower course that had many more obstacles. Event #3 Race Cars
Unfortunetly the event got off to a sloppy start, trying to avoid a time disaster that occured in last years event, the competition got started without all the spotters in place. With only two people trying to spot eight racers on the track and an uniformed track maintenance personnel helping caused to some confusionl. Winners were selected on merit and advanced to the championship round. Two qualifying rounds with of groups of 8 & 9 competed for the top 8 spots for the finals. A conselation race was held for finishers from 9 through 17. In the finals Bob Anderson got out to a comanding lead and never let up.
1 Bob Anderson 2 Dan Tubbs 3 Doug Porter 4 Ken Maass 5 Curtis Viggers 17 Slavik Dymerski
Event #4 Bumper boats
Event #4 was new to the superstars competition. This year we tried the bumber boat. We created a race course where the competitors had to steer a round boat through a figure eight course. Again a qualifying round was held to select the top eight racers for the finals. Competition was fierce. Withthe event being held around water it was hard not to get wet, of course it did not help with a couple of sly guys getting the water hose out to help with the situation.

Event #5 Rock Climb
I honestly had to say after
my first attempt I had it. I declared myself the winner. After having
watched my brother climb the thirtyfoot rock wall in what seemed an
effortless attempt in 39. something seconds, having beaten his time
by just 3 tenths of a second I thought we were a shoe-in for first
and second. But due to what was said at the start of competition
about "something about two attempts" things changed. A couple of guys
climbed for the second time and lowered their time substancially. I
gave it my best shot, even loosing my footing for a couple of seconds
on my second attempt only to lower my time still by three seconds.
Unfortunetly it was not enough. Dan Domonoske having failed
misserably on his first attempt only to be deafeted, came back to
score an unbelievable victory. Climbing the wall in close to 21
seconds. 1 Dan Domonoske 21.20 2 Ken Maass 24.17 3 Roger Connor 28.15 4 Bob Anderson 28.66 5 Slavik Dymerski 29.07 16 Doug Porter DNF 16 Mitch Gold DNF
Event#6 Batting Cages
This was a difficult event for all. We decided unanimously to use the VERY FAST batting cages. I do not know for sure just how fast the balls sped toward me, but I can say that I was not seeing them as they past. The mighty Casey would have struck out. I have gained much appreciation for what the major league hitters go through day in and day out. A 90 mile fast ball coming at you is some type of feeling. Scoring was as follows -2 pts. for a line drive, 1 pt for contact, 0 for wiffing or letting the ball go by. Each player got 10 pitches

Event #7 Bowling
This year with the top three finishers from last years Superstars absent the competition was wide open. To add a little spice to the event, the event consisted of bowling the first game with your strong hand and the second with your off hand. Basically right handed then left handed. The left handed bowling was a new experience for all. It did turn out for a couple of bowlers Doug and Roger that their score actually went up substancially bowling with their weaker hands. For many spectators at the bowling alley I am sure they thought they were watching some special olympic people bowling. It was a site to behold. One comment that was relayed to me during off hand bowling was how no one was just sitting and watching, everyone had a vested interst in learning how to bowl with the opposite hand. I have to say that I thought I was quite the show having thrown a ball down the lane left handed for the first frame and striking out, something I did not accomplish in the previoius 10 frames with my "STRONG " hand.
This format created quite the competition. In the strong hand bowling Dave Millers 152 nearly beat Scott Randles 151. Then in the off hand bowling Doug Porter racked up a 119 then almost got beat by Roger Connor. Roger spared out in the 10th only to bowl a zero to finish with 112. Then in the overall standing in came down to Scott Randles off hand 10th frame. Scott had to spare or strike in the 10th to win. Scott came through with a strike. Then needing only to knock down one pin for the win, commenced to bowl a zero. We don't know if he was setting us up or just lost it, but on his next roll he knocked down six pins for the victory.
